Buying guide

How to choose

The main divide is between trackers that link directly to your brokerage accounts and those where you enter or import transactions yourself. Linking is convenient; manual entry gives you more privacy and more accurate cost-basis history.

  1. How data gets in

Account linking, CSV import and manual entry each have trade-offs. Check that your brokers are supported by whichever you prefer.

  2. Performance method

Time-weighted and money-weighted returns answer different questions. Good trackers show both and benchmark against an index.

  3. Dividend features

Income investors should look for a dividend calendar, forward income projection, yield on cost and dividend safety scores.

  4. Privacy and hosting

A few trackers are open source and can be self-hosted, which keeps your holdings off third-party servers entirely.

Portfolio Trackers: common questions

Is it safe to link my brokerage account to a tracker?

Reputable trackers connect through aggregators using read-only access, so they cannot place trades or move money. You are still sharing your holdings with a third party, so check the privacy policy, or use a tracker that works from imported files.

What is the difference between a portfolio tracker and a trading journal?

A tracker looks at what you hold: allocation, returns and income across accounts. A journal looks at what you did: individual trades, setups and habits. Investors want the first, active traders the second, and many people use both.

Can I track dividends for free?

Yes. Several trackers include dividend calendars and income totals in their free tier, typically limited to one portfolio or a set number of holdings.
