Empower's free Personal Dashboard (formerly Personal Capital) links bank, brokerage and retirement accounts to track net worth, cash flow and retirement.
What it is
Empower is a large US retirement plan provider, and its free Personal Dashboard is the set of money tools it took over from Personal Capital. You link accounts (brokerage, IRA, 401(k), bank, credit card, mortgage and loans) and the dashboard pulls them into one net worth figure, tracks spending and cash flow, and shows your investments together. Linking every account is optional, but the tools are more accurate the more you connect.
For investors, the useful parts are Portfolio Analysis, which shows performance against benchmarks, your overall asset allocation and a risk check, and the Retirement Planner, which projects whether savings are on track. Nine tools in all are free: Retirement Planner, Net Worth, Budgeting and Cash Flow, Portfolio Analysis, Savings Planner, Debt Paydown, Emergency Fund, Transactions and Tax Filing. They work on the web and in iOS and Android apps.
The dashboard is how Empower finds clients for its paid advisory service, Personal Strategy, which starts at $100,000 invested and charges 0.89% a year below $1 million. You are not obliged to use it. The dashboard is built for long-term household tracking, not for trading: it has no charting, no screeners and no trade-level performance analysis.
