Option Flow and Unusual Options Activity Tools
Option flow tools show large and unusual options orders as they hit the tape: sweeps that take liquidity across several exchanges, block trades negotiated off the screen, and orders that are big relative to open interest. Many also add dark pool equity prints and estimates of dealer gamma exposure, so you can see where hedging might pin or accelerate a move.

Buying guide
How to choose
Flow is a lead, not a signal. A large call purchase can be a hedge against a short stock position, one leg of a spread, or a closing trade. The better tools help you tell these apart by showing whether an order traded at the bid or the ask, whether volume exceeded open interest, and how the position was built over time.
-
Data speed and source
Check that the feed is real-time from OPRA rather than delayed by 15 minutes, and whether dark pool and equity block prints are included or an extra.
-
Filtering
The raw tape is thousands of orders a day. Look for filters on premium size, expiration, volume against open interest, side of the market and sector, plus saved presets.
-
Context
Historical flow per ticker, open-interest change the next morning and multi-leg detection are what separate a useful platform from a scrolling list.
-
Alerts and access
If you cannot watch a screen all day, mobile apps, push alerts and Discord or API delivery matter more than the dashboard.
Option Flow: common questions
What is option flow?
Option flow is the stream of options trades reported by US exchanges, filtered to highlight orders that are large, aggressive or unusual for that contract. Traders watch it to see where institutions and other large participants are positioning.
What is the difference between a sweep and a block?
A sweep is one large order split across several exchanges and filled at once, which suggests urgency. A block is a single large trade, usually negotiated privately and printed on one exchange. Sweeps are generally read as more directional than blocks.
Can I follow option flow for free?
Yes, in a limited way. Several sites publish delayed or end-of-day unusual options activity at no cost, and some paid platforms have a free tier. Real-time, filterable flow almost always needs a subscription because the underlying exchange data is licensed.
Does unusual options activity predict stock moves?
Not reliably on its own. Large orders are often hedges or parts of spreads, and the trader behind them may be wrong. Flow is most useful as one input alongside price action, a catalyst and your own risk limits.
