SqueezeMetrics

squeezemetrics.com

Free daily charts of the Dark Index (DIX) and gamma exposure (GEX) for the S&P 500 from the firm that published both measures.

What it is

SqueezeMetrics is a small research shop known mainly for two market-wide indicators. The Dark Index (DIX) is a dollar-weighted measure of short volume in dark pools across S&P 500 components, used as a gauge of off-exchange buying. Gamma exposure (GEX) estimates, in dollars, how much option market makers must hedge; high GEX tends to go with quieter markets and low GEX with larger swings. The firm's free white papers (Short is Long, Gamma Exposure and The Implied Order Book) explain the methods.

For most traders the useful part is free: a public chart of DIX, GEX and the S&P 500 with 6-month, 2-year and full-history views, updated after each trading day. The same daily series can be downloaded as a CSV file, which makes it easy to pull into a spreadsheet or backtest.

The paid Data subscription is a different product aimed at professionals. It costs $720 a month and covers single-stock dark pool and gamma ratios for more than 4,500 NYSE and Nasdaq securities back to 2011, with spreadsheet downloads, API access, a research page and the Yacht Club datasets (NPD, VGR, GEX+ and a Sunday note). At the time of review the plan was marked closed and signup was by invitation only.

Strengths

  • The DIX and GEX series come from the firm that introduced them, with published methods
  • Free chart and CSV history need no account
  • Full daily history makes the series easy to test against your own data
  • Plain, fast pages with no upsell on the free chart

Limitations

  • The free data is a single market-wide series for the S&P 500, updated once a day, not intraday
  • Single-stock data needs the $720-a-month Data plan, which was closed to new signups when checked
  • No alerts, options flow feed, screener or mobile app
  • The indicators describe positioning and hedging pressure; the site itself calls them forecasting inputs with no fixed meaning

Good fit for

  • Traders who follow market-wide gamma and dark pool positioning as context for index trades
  • Quants and hobbyists who want a free daily DIX and GEX history to test
  • Readers who want to understand GEX from its original write-up

Look elsewhere if

  • Traders who want intraday or single-stock gamma exposure; a paid GEX tool fits better
  • Anyone looking for a real-time options flow feed
