GuruFocus

gurufocus.com

Value-investing research tracking what well-known fund managers buy and sell, with 30 years of financials, GF Value estimates and a fundamental screener.

What it is

GuruFocus was started in 2004 by Charlie Tian around one idea: begin your research with stocks that successful value investors already own. It collects their 13F, 13D/G and mutual fund filings into guru portfolios and trade histories, then surrounds them with fundamental research tools: stock summary pages with its own GF Value estimate and GF Scores, 30 years of financial statements, insider and politician trades, DCF and WACC calculators, an All-in-One screener, model portfolios and an Excel add-in.

Membership is priced per market region and billed yearly by default. The US region costs $549 a year on the Premium level; Asia and Europe are also $549, other regions $369, with $100 a year off each extra region. Premium covers 140+ premium gurus, screener downloads up to 1,000 rows, five years of screener backtesting and 2,000 Excel add-in queries. Premium Plus widens that to 8,000+ institutional filers and 15,000+ mutual funds, backtesting since 2006 and unlimited add-in queries; Professional adds delisted stocks and an account manager. Their prices were not visible on the public pricing page.

Guru data is only as fresh as the filings behind it. GuruFocus itself says quarterly holdings usually appear one to four months after the trades, and even its Real Time Picks lag trades by one to two weeks. It is a tool for long-term research, which is how GuruFocus describes itself, not for timing trades.

The Data API is priced separately.

Strengths

  • Deep coverage of investor filings: 13F, 13D/G and mutual fund holdings in one place
  • Up to 30 years of financial statements per company
  • Covers stock markets well beyond the US, with the same screeners and valuation tools
  • Clear refund terms: a 7-day trial, full refunds within 30 days, then prorated refunds

Limitations

  • Guru holdings lag the actual trades by one to four months, by GuruFocus's own account
  • Priced per region: each market beyond the first adds $269 to $449 a year
  • Premium includes only 140+ premium gurus; the 8,000+ institutional filers need Premium Plus
  • Cancellation is by contact form rather than a self-service button

Good fit for

  • Long-term value investors who want to see what established fund managers own
  • Investors researching fundamentals across many years of financial statements
  • Investors screening non-US markets with the same tools as US stocks

Look elsewhere if

  • Short-term traders who need timely signals; guru data is delayed by the filing cycle
  • Budget-minded investors who need several regions, since each adds a yearly fee
