WhaleWisdom
whalewisdom.com
A 13F research site for tracking what hedge funds and large managers hold, with filings back to 2001, a 13F backtester and quarterly-billed paid plans.
What it is
WhaleWisdom collects the quarterly 13F filings that US institutional managers with more than $100 million must send to the SEC, and turns them into fund and stock pages: current and past holdings, quarter-over-quarter buys and sells, an estimated average price paid, and which funds own a given stock. It also processes N-PORT filings from mutual funds and ETFs (kept separate to avoid double counting) and Schedule 13D/G ownership filings. New filings are imported within minutes of appearing on the SEC site.
The free account is broad: most tools work, including unlimited email alerts and a backtester, but only on roughly the last two years of 13F data. Paid plans are billed quarterly. Standard removes ads and opens the full history back to 2001, Excel export (3,000 rows per download), the Excel add-in, global holdings and the WhaleScore and WhaleIndex. Pro adds the Combined Holdings report, WhaleTrader, advanced backtester features and larger limits. There are no trial accounts.
Keep the data's timing in mind: 13F filings are due 45 days after each quarter ends, most managers file near the deadline, and they list long US positions only. What you see is a snapshot that can be several months old and leaves out shorts and most non-US holdings.
Key features
- Fund and stock pages
- Holdings, quarterly changes, estimated average price paid and ownership by fund for every 13F filer and stock, with links back to each SEC filing.
- 13F backtester
- Tests strategies built from 13F holdings using total-return prices; the free plan uses the past two years of data and Pro unlocks advanced features.
- Alerts and watchlists
- Unlimited email alerts on new filings, with fund groups and stock watchlists whose size grows with each plan (5, 10 or 50 members).
- 13F screener and heat map
- Screens stocks and funds on 13F-specific data and draws a 13F heat map, updated a day or two after each filing deadline.
- 13D/G and N-PORT data
- Activist and 5%-plus ownership filings and quarterly mutual fund and ETF holdings (N-PORT since 2019) alongside 13Fs.
- Excel add-in and API
- Paid plans export to Excel and query history through the API, capped at 50 (Standard) or 200 (Pro) funds and stocks every 90 days.
- Combined Holdings and WhaleTrader (Pro)
- Aggregates the holdings of a chosen group of funds into one portfolio view, plus full WhaleTrader access.
