Twelve Data

twelvedata.com

Market data API for stocks, ETFs, forex, crypto and commodities on 250+ exchanges, with a free 800-request-a-day key and paid plans priced by credits.

What it is

Twelve Data sells market data through a REST API and WebSocket streams: more than 100,000 symbols across 250+ exchanges in over 90 countries, covering stocks, ETFs, forex pairs, crypto pairs and commodities, with real-time, historical and end-of-day prices, fundamentals and 100+ technical indicators calculated server-side. There are SDKs for Python, Go, C++, C#, Java and R, plus an MCP server for AI agents.

Plans are priced by API credits per minute rather than by data set. The free Basic key allows 8 credits a minute and 800 a day with real-time US equities, ETFs, forex and crypto, but no fundamentals and only trial WebSocket access. Grow adds fundamentals, 20+ markets and 377 credits a minute, still without production WebSocket. Pro adds 1,500 WebSocket credits, 70+ markets including real-time European stocks, and fixed income and fund data. Ultra covers all markets with the most credits and a 99.95% uptime SLA.

Two things to check before choosing. Individual plans are licensed for personal, internal, non-commercial use; showing the data in a product or to customers needs a business plan, priced separately. And streaming is a Pro-level feature: below Pro you poll the REST API within your credit limit. The API documentation we read showed no options chain endpoint, although the pricing page lists options among its features, so confirm with Twelve Data if you need options data.

Strengths

  • One API across stocks, forex, crypto and commodities worldwide
  • Free key with real-time US equities and crypto for prototyping
  • Server-side technical indicators save computation
  • SDKs in six languages and an MCP server

Limitations

  • 800 requests a day on the free plan is tight for anything beyond testing
  • Production WebSocket streaming requires the $229 Pro plan
  • Individual plans cannot be used commercially; business licensing costs extra
  • Fundamentals are not included on the free plan
  • No options chain endpoint appeared in the API documentation

Good fit for

  • Developers who want one API for several asset classes
  • Hobby projects and backtests that fit within the free daily limit
  • Traders building spreadsheets or dashboards with international data

Look elsewhere if

  • Options traders who need chains and Greeks (an options-focused API fits better)
  • Commercial apps on a small budget, given the separate business licence
