Marketstack

marketstack.com

Simple REST API for end-of-day, intraday and real-time stock prices on global exchanges, with a free 100-request plan and paid plans from $9.99 a month.

What it is

Marketstack, an APILayer product, is a JSON REST API for stock prices. Its core is end-of-day data for tickers on exchanges worldwide, with 750+ market indices, splits and dividends, and exchange, currency and timezone reference data. Paid plans add intraday prices for US stocks sourced from the IEX exchange, bonds, ETF holdings and, on the higher tiers, real-time prices, commodities and company fundamentals. Six SEC EDGAR endpoints for 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K filings were added recently. It does not offer options data.

Plans differ mainly by monthly request allowance and history depth. The free plan is 100 requests a month, end-of-day only, one year of history and non-commercial use. Basic adds 10,000 requests, 10 years of history, commercial use and IEX intraday data. Intraday intervals shorter than 15 minutes, which Marketstack calls real-time updates, start with Professional; Business adds company ratings, statements and facts.

Usage is counted per symbol, not per call: each ticker in a request uses one request, so a 100-symbol query uses 100. Paid plans bill overage per extra request instead of cutting you off. Intraday history is limited to the last 10,000 data points per interval. Version 1 of the API was deprecated after June 30, 2025, and new features are documented for version 2 only.

Strengths

  • Low entry price for commercial use, starting at $9.99 a month
  • Wide end-of-day coverage of global exchanges and 750+ indices
  • Plain REST requests with JSON responses and simple key-based authentication
  • Overage billing instead of hard cut-offs on paid plans

Limitations

  • No options, futures or forex price data
  • Intraday data covers US stocks from the IEX exchange only, not consolidated data from all US exchanges
  • Each symbol in a request counts as one request, so multi-ticker queries use the allowance quickly
  • The free plan is end-of-day only, 100 requests a month and non-commercial
  • Intraday history is limited to the last 10,000 data points per interval

Good fit for

  • Developers who need daily stock prices for global markets at low cost
  • Hobby projects and dashboards that refresh a few tickers once a day
  • Small apps that also want SEC filings data from the same provider

Look elsewhere if

  • Options traders or anyone needing options chains and Greeks
  • Strategies that need consolidated real-time US quotes or tick data
