StockCharts.com

stockcharts.com

Browser technical charting since 1999, strong on classic chart types, market breadth and Point & Figure, with scans, alerts and a one-month free trial.

What it is

StockCharts is a web charting service built around its SharpCharts and Advanced Charting Platform (ACP) tools. It covers US stocks, ETFs and mutual funds, Canadian, UK and Indian stocks, indexes, commodities, currencies, bonds and cryptocurrencies, plus more than a thousand market indicators such as breadth, bullish percent indexes, McClellan oscillators and put/call ratios. Chart types go well beyond candlesticks: Point & Figure, Renko, Kagi, seasonality charts and Relative Rotation Graphs (RRG) are all built in.

Anyone can make charts without an account, but free charts are limited to three indicators and three overlays and are not saved. The paid Service Levels (Basic, Extra and PRO) add intraday charts, saved ChartLists, screens, scans and alerts, and differ mainly in how many of each you can save, the chart refresh interval and how far back historical data goes (1980 on Basic and Extra, 1900 on PRO).

All accounts use free BATS real-time data for US stocks and delayed data elsewhere. Official consolidated real-time data for NYSE and NASDAQ, and for Canada or the UK, are separate monthly Data Plans on top of the subscription. Charts refresh automatically every few seconds rather than streaming tick by tick.

Paid members also get members-only commentary and educational content from the site's analysts, and the free ChartSchool reference explains every indicator it offers.

Strengths

  • Unusually wide range of chart types, including Point & Figure, Renko, Kagi and RRG
  • Deep market breadth and sentiment data that most charting sites do not carry
  • Long history, back to 1980 on Basic and Extra and 1900 on PRO
  • Runs in any browser with nothing to install
  • Free ChartSchool reference for every indicator

Limitations

  • Charts refresh every 5 or 15 seconds rather than streaming tick by tick
  • Official consolidated US real-time data costs extra on top of the subscription
  • The free tier cannot save charts and allows only three indicators
  • Without a Data Plan, markets outside the US are delayed
  • Scan and alert allowances on Basic are very small (1 scan, 2 price alerts)

Good fit for

  • Swing traders and investors who use classic technical analysis on daily and weekly charts
  • Traders who follow market breadth, sector rotation and sentiment indicators
  • Point & Figure and RRG users

Look elsewhere if

  • Day traders who need streaming charts and direct order entry from a desktop platform
  • Options traders who need flow, Greeks or volatility analytics, which a dedicated options tool covers
