Ortex
public.ortex.com
Short-interest analytics estimating short interest and cost to borrow intraday from securities-lending data, with options, signals and an API on Advanced.
What it is
ORTEX is known mainly for its short-interest estimates. Exchange-reported short interest in the US comes out twice a month and is well over a week old when published; ORTEX instead estimates it through the trading day from securities-lending data, alongside cost to borrow, lending availability, utilisation-style tightness and days to cover. Around that core it adds options flow and Greeks, gamma exposure, trading signals such as short-squeeze and technical alerts, a daily 0 to 100 Stock Score, analyst, insider and government trades, fundamentals, index rebalance forecasts and a news feed.
The plan split matters more than usual. Basic ($49 a month, or $468 a year) gives delayed short interest, cost to borrow and days to cover, plus news, prices, holders, insiders and fundamentals. Real-time short interest and cost to borrow, options data, signals, Stock Scores, the ORTEX AI assistant and API access all sit in Advanced ($149 a month, or $1,188 a year). If the live short data is why you want ORTEX, budget for Advanced.
A free account takes under a minute and needs no card, though the site does not spell out what it includes. Coverage spans US, UK and European equities plus ETFs, indexes and FX. Access is through the web platform, iOS and Android apps, a REST API with a Python SDK, an Excel add-in and an MCP connector for AI assistants.

Strengths
- Short interest estimated intraday instead of waiting for twice-monthly exchange reports
- Cost to borrow and lending availability alongside short interest in one view
- Covers US, UK and European equities, not only US stocks
- API access is included in Advanced rather than sold as a separate product
- Web, mobile apps, Excel and API access to the same data
Limitations
- Real-time short interest, options data and signals all require Advanced at $149 a month
- Basic shows delayed short interest, which undercuts the main reason to use ORTEX
- Short interest figures are ORTEX estimates, not official exchange-reported numbers
- The free plan's contents are not documented on the site
Good fit for
- Traders who follow short squeezes and crowded short positions
- Investors who check borrow cost before shorting or holding a heavily shorted stock
- Quant traders who want short and lending data through an API
Look elsewhere if
- Traders who only need official short interest twice a month (free exchange data covers that)
- Options-flow traders who want a dedicated flow tool without paying for short data
