What it is

Finnhub is a REST and websocket API that combines market data with company data. Besides real-time US stock prices, forex and crypto, it offers financial statements, analyst estimates and price targets, earnings calendars, company news, ETF and mutual fund holdings, and alternative data including congressional trading, Senate lobbying, patents, ESG scores and social sentiment. Official client libraries exist for Python, Go, JavaScript, Ruby, Kotlin and PHP, and there is an MCP server for AI assistants.

The free plan is generous for prototyping: 60 calls a minute, US coverage, a websocket for 50 symbols, a year of company news, a month of earnings calendar and the last four quarters of earnings surprises. Paid access is sold as separate packs rather than one ladder. Market data runs from $49.99 to $199.99 a month and mainly adds history depth, call limits and websocket symbols; fundamentals cost $50 or $200 a month per market; estimates, ETFs and indices, forex, crypto and bonds each have their own pricing.

Read the billing terms before subscribing: most packs are billed quarterly or annually rather than monthly, and the listed plans carry a personal-use license, with startups and enterprises pointed to a separate page. Every plan also has a hard cap of 30 calls a second. Options data does not appear in any of the pricing tables.

Strengths

  • A usable free tier with 60 calls a minute and a websocket feed
  • Fundamentals, estimates and alternative data alongside prices in one API
  • Congressional trading, lobbying and other unusual datasets not found in most price APIs
  • Official SDKs in six languages plus an MCP server

Limitations

  • No options data in any listed plan
  • Paid data is split into separate packs, so prices, fundamentals and estimates are bought separately
  • Most paid plans are billed quarterly or annually, not month to month
  • Listed plans are for personal use; commercial use needs a separate agreement
  • International stock data outside the LSE is end-of-day only

Good fit for

  • Developers prototyping stock apps on a free key
  • Builders who need fundamentals, estimates and news in the same API
  • Researchers interested in congressional trading, lobbying or sentiment data

Look elsewhere if

  • Options traders who need chains, Greeks or options flow
