QuantRocket
quantrocket.com
Self-hosted Python research and trading platform in Docker with JupyterLab, bundling Zipline, Moonshot and Alphalens, trading live via IBKR or Alpaca.
What it is
QuantRocket is a quant platform you run yourself. It ships as a set of Docker containers that work on Linux, Mac or Windows, on a laptop, a workstation or a cloud server, and you work in JupyterLab (VS Code is also supported). Because it is self-hosted, your code and broker credentials stay on your own machine, and you can give it as much computing power as you like.
Several open-source engines come ready to use: Zipline for event-driven backtests, Moonshot for fast vectorised backtests on daily or intraday data across equities, futures and FX, Pipeline for screening large universes, Alphalens for factor analysis, and MoonshotML for walk-forward testing with machine-learning libraries. Data comes from QuantRocket's own US stock data, EDI for global end-of-day prices, Sharadar for US fundamentals and Interactive Brokers, and you can import your own. Live and paper trading run through Interactive Brokers or Alpaca, including multiple strategies and accounts.
The free tier is for learning: five years of US stock history (2007 to 2011), about 30 sample symbols, and the full research and backtesting tools, but no live or paper trading. Paid Non-Professional (personal use, one user) and Professional (per licensed user) licences come monthly or annually, with some datasets included and others bought separately. Licence and data prices are not shown publicly; the pricing page asks you to sign in.

Strengths
- Several established backtesting engines in one environment instead of one proprietary engine
- Self-hosted, so code and broker credentials stay on your own machine
- Takes a strategy from research to live trading at Interactive Brokers or Alpaca
- A free tier that includes the complete research toolset
Limitations
- Requires Python and comfort with Docker; there is no point-and-click strategy builder
- Free tier data stops in 2011 and it cannot paper or live trade
- Licence and data prices are not published without signing in
- Live trading is limited to Interactive Brokers and Alpaca
- You maintain the installation and hardware yourself
Good fit for
- Python developers who want a self-hosted quant stack
- Traders running factor research or machine-learning strategies
- Interactive Brokers or Alpaca users automating systematic strategies
Look elsewhere if
- Traders who do not code (a no-code backtester fits better)
- Anyone who wants a fully hosted cloud service with no setup
