Build Alpha
buildalpha.com
No-code Windows software that builds strategies with a genetic algorithm, tests them for overfitting and exports code to TradeStation, MetaTrader and more.
What it is
Build Alpha searches for trading strategies instead of testing one you already have. You choose a market, timeframe and the signals it may combine, and a genetic algorithm assembles and tests thousands of rule combinations from a library of several thousand built-in signals: technical indicators, price action, volatility, seasonality, breadth, sentiment, economic and COT data and intermarket relationships. You can also add your own signals in Python, though no coding is needed.
The emphasis is on filtering out strategies that only fit the past. Robustness tools include out-of-sample testing, Monte Carlo simulations, noise tests, parameter permutations and delayed-entry tests, with a portfolio mode for combining strategies. Finished strategies export as code for TradeStation, MultiCharts, NinjaTrader, MetaTrader 4 and 5, TradingView Pine Script, ProRealTime and Python for Interactive Brokers.
Build Alpha is sold as a lifetime license, with historical data back to 2006 included and the option to connect a broker or import your own data. It is a one-developer business that does not offer a free trial or demo version. The software requires Windows; Mac users need a virtual machine.

Strengths
- Generates strategy ideas rather than only testing ones you write
- Robustness checks are built into the workflow
- Exports code to most retail trading platforms
- One-time license with upgrades included and data back to 2006
Limitations
- No free trial or demo version
- Windows only; Mac users need a virtual machine
- $1,497 upfront is a large commitment compared with subscription backtesters
- Run by a single developer, which limits support capacity by the provider's own account
Good fit for
- Systematic futures and stock traders who want machine-generated strategy ideas
- Traders who automate on TradeStation, NinjaTrader, MetaTrader or TradingView but do not code
- Traders worried about overfitting who want robustness tests in one place
Look elsewhere if
- Options traders testing spreads (an options backtester fits better)
- Anyone who wants to try before paying
