What it is

AmiBroker is a long-running Windows program for traders who write their own systems. Strategies, scans and indicators are coded in AFL, AmiBroker's formula language, and then run through the Analysis window for explorations (custom screens), portfolio-level backtests, optimization with 3D result charts, walk-forward testing and Monte Carlo simulation. Position sizing, ranking, rotational systems and custom backtest code are all supported, and orders can be sent from code to Interactive Brokers through a free auto-trading add-on.

It is sold as a perpetual licence, not a subscription. The Standard Edition is 32-bit only, limits the real-time quote window to 10 symbols, starts intraday data at one-minute bars and runs two analysis threads. The Professional Edition adds tick and second bars, unlimited real-time symbols, MAE/MFE statistics, up to 32 threads and a 64-bit build. The Ultimate Pack Pro bundles Professional with AmiQuote (a downloader for free end-of-day and intraday data) and AFL Code Wizard, which turns plain-English rules into AFL.

Every licence includes 24 months of upgrades; after that you keep your version or upgrade at half price. Data is not included: AmiQuote pulls free end-of-day quotes, and real-time data needs a separate feed such as IQFeed, eSignal or Interactive Brokers (Professional Edition only). All sales are final, so the free 30-day trial, which needs no signup, is the way to evaluate it. Note that the trial download is version 6.93 while licensed users get version 7.

Strengths

  • One-time purchase with no monthly fee; a licence can be used on several of your own machines
  • Portfolio backtests and optimizations run quickly, with multithreading on the Professional Edition
  • Walk-forward and Monte Carlo testing built in for checking system robustness
  • Works with almost any data source, from free end-of-day quotes to paid real-time feeds

Limitations

  • Windows only
  • You must learn AFL to build systems; the Code Wizard helps but is a paid add-on on its own
  • No market data included; real-time feeds are separate subscriptions and need the Professional Edition
  • All sales are final, with no refunds
  • Standard Edition is 32-bit only and limited to 10 real-time symbols

Good fit for

  • System traders who want to code and backtest their own rules on stocks, futures or forex
  • Traders who prefer a one-time licence to a monthly subscription
  • Interactive Brokers clients who want to automate a tested system

Look elsewhere if

  • Mac or Chromebook users
  • Traders who want point-and-click backtesting without writing code
  • Options traders who need to backtest option chains and Greeks
