What it is

TradeStation is a self-clearing US broker built around trading software. It has two desktop platforms: TradeStation Desktop, running since 1991, where EasyLanguage strategies, RadarScreen (real-time ranking of up to 1,000 symbols on 180+ indicators), OptionStation Pro and the Matrix order-book ladder live; and TITAN X, a newer Windows and Mac platform focused on multi-leg options chains, strategy-grouped positions and multi-monitor layouts. Web and mobile apps share the same account.

Stocks and ETFs trade commission-free. Options, futures and direct routing are priced by monthly volume tiers: at the entry tier (up to 500 contracts a month) single-leg options cost $0.80 per contract per side and multi-leg $0.40, falling to $0 above 10,000 contracts. Index options carry an extra fee, and exercise or assignment costs $14.95 per position. Futures start at $1.75 per contract per side ($0.50 for micros).

Read the fee schedule before opening an account: there is a $10 monthly inactivity fee unless the account meets a minimum activity level, a $125 outgoing transfer fee and a $35 annual IRA fee. Traders who only want the software can subscribe to TradeStation Analytics, the desktop platform without a brokerage account, from $99 a month.

Strengths

  • EasyLanguage lets traders code, backtest and automate strategies inside the broker's own platform
  • Commission-free stocks, and options and futures costs that fall as monthly volume rises
  • RadarScreen, OptionStation Pro and the Matrix are included with the account
  • Long historical database for backtesting stocks, options and futures

Limitations

  • At the entry tier, options cost $0.80 per contract single-leg, more than several options-focused brokers
  • A $10 monthly inactivity fee applies to accounts that do not meet minimum activity
  • EasyLanguage automation runs on TradeStation Desktop, while TITAN X is the newer interface, so some workflows span two platforms
  • Exercise and assignment cost $14.95 per position and outgoing transfers $125
  • The software alone, without an account, costs from $99 a month

Good fit for

  • Systematic traders who want to write and automate strategies
  • Active options and futures traders with enough volume to reach lower tiers
  • Technical traders who scan and rank many symbols in real time
