TradeLog

tradelog.com

Windows tax software that imports broker history, applies wash-sale rules across accounts and IRAs, and produces Form 8949, Schedule D and 1256 reports.

What it is

TradeLog is not a trading journal in the usual sense: it is tax-reporting software for traders whose broker 1099-B forms do not tell the whole story. Brokers only track wash sales inside a single account, while the IRS rule applies across all of your accounts, including IRAs, and between options and their underlying stock. TradeLog imports your trades from each broker, matches them, applies the wash-sale rule across everything, and produces Form 8949, Schedule D, Form 4797 and a Section 1256 report for Form 6781. A Potential Wash Sale report during the year helps you plan exits before December.

The three editions are annual subscriptions that differ by the number of trade records. Investor covers up to 1,500 records, Trader up to 5,000 and adds support for Section 475 mark-to-market accounting (for traders who have elected trader tax status), and Elite has no record limit. Each includes one File Key, which unlocks final reports for one tax file; extra File Keys cost $79. Renewals are 20 percent cheaper than the first year.

The 30-day free trial lets you import unlimited records and preview the reports, but you cannot export, save or copy reports or close the tax year until you buy. TradeLog is Windows software that stores data on your own computer or cloud drive. It also sells a version for CPAs and a done-for-you tax preparation service.

Strengths

  • Handles wash sales across accounts and IRAs, which broker 1099-B forms do not
  • Produces the IRS forms active traders need, including the Section 1256 report
  • Supports mark-to-market accounting for traders with trader tax status
  • Covers futures, forex and options as well as stocks

Limitations

  • Windows desktop software; there is no web or native Mac version
  • Priced by trade records, so very active traders need the $459 Elite edition
  • Each File Key covers one tax file; extra ones cost $79
  • Built for tax reporting, not for journaling, trade review or performance analytics
  • The trial cannot export or save reports

Good fit for

  • Active US traders with wash sales across several brokers or IRAs
  • Traders who have elected trader tax status and use mark-to-market accounting
  • Futures and index options traders who need Section 1256 reporting

Look elsewhere if

  • Traders looking for a trade journal with charts, tags and performance stats
  • Mac users who do not want to run Windows
  • Long-term investors whose broker 1099-B is already correct
