SoFi Invest
sofi.com
SoFi's brokerage: commission-free stocks, ETFs and options with no per-contract fee, fractional shares, IPO access, crypto and a 0.25% robo-advisor.
What it is
SoFi Invest is the investing arm of SoFi, the online bank and lender. Self-directed accounts trade US-listed and OTC stocks, ETFs and options with $0 commissions, and SoFi says options carry no contract fees, although regulatory and clearing fees still apply per contract. You can start with $5, buy fractional shares, request allocations in some IPOs and trade crypto. Traditional, Roth and SEP IRAs are available, and SoFi Plus members can earn a 1% match on qualifying IRA deposits.
The robo-advisor (automated investing) charges a 0.25% annual advisory fee with a $50 minimum. Margin is available, with rates from 9.75% on balances up to $50,000, stepping down for larger balances.
Read the fee schedule before opening an account. It lists a $25 inactivity fee for every six months without a login, a $50 fee on the first sale of IPO shares within 120 days of the IPO, $100 to transfer an account out by ACAT, and transaction fees on some mutual and interval funds. The platform is designed for simple investing on the web and mobile apps rather than for active traders who need advanced charting or order types.
