Reuters

reuters.com

Global wire service for business, markets and political news from its own correspondents, on the web and free iOS and Android apps, with a subscription.

What it is

Reuters is one of the large international news agencies. Much of the market news traders see elsewhere, on broker platforms, terminals and other news sites, is first reported by wire services like Reuters, so reading it directly gets you the original report, usually written in a plain, factual style without commentary. Coverage spans company earnings and deals, central banks, commodities, currencies, economic data and the geopolitical events that move markets.

Reuters.com now uses a paywall. Registration with an email address unlocks some articles, and a paid digital subscription is needed for regular reading; in some countries free registration is still the only requirement. The iOS app lists subscription in-app purchases at $4.00 and $45.00. The site and apps carry ads for subscribers too.

The Reuters apps for iOS and Android add a personalised news feed, a markets section with a customisable watchlist and push alerts for breaking news. This is the consumer product; the Reuters news feeds built into professional trading terminals are licensed separately.

Reuters.com blocked our page reader, so the website's own subscription page could not be checked; prices above come from Reuters' App Store listing. Free registration unlocks limited reading, and in some countries registration is all that is required. Subscribers still see ads.

Free option: Free registration gives limited access to articles on the site and in the apps; regular reading needs a paid subscription in the US.

Strengths

  • Primary-source reporting that many other outlets quote
  • Plain, factual style with little opinion
  • Broad international coverage of markets, commodities and policy
  • Free iOS and Android apps with breaking news alerts and a markets watchlist

Limitations

  • A paywall limits how much you can read without subscribing
  • Ads are shown even to subscribers
  • It is a news source, not a market data or charting tool
  • Headlines on the consumer site are not the same product as the licensed professional Reuters feeds

Good fit for

  • Traders who want original reports on macro and company news
  • Investors following global markets, commodities and central banks
  • Readers who prefer straight news to opinion and commentary

Look elsewhere if

  • Traders who need millisecond headlines in their trading platform (a licensed news feed fits better)
  • Anyone looking for trade ideas or analysis rather than news
